Szilvia Varjasi

leathersmith

My story:

In my childhood, I already felt very close to natural materials (stone, wood, bone, leather), from which I made functional and decorative objects for myself and my parents. My smaller objects (bracelets and necklaces) made of leather brought about the greatest success, so I was intrigued by this material most. It was great help to me that some members of our family had artistic tendencies. My uncle Tamás Varjasi leathersmith artist initiated me into the mysteries of leather work. I established my own workshop in 2006.

What will you find here?

Leather crafting is one of the most ancient crafts. I produce my items from genuine leather, with the addition of natural materials by leather working handcraft techniques. This makes the creative process extremely time consuming. I make my objects from vegetable-tanned cow skin. I find it very important to achieve a “distressed” effect on my hand-dyed bags which can increase the uniqueness of my products. Making use of artisan traditions and old motifs, I concentrate on making unique products. Such is the application of the horse rider motif, which is a family tradition and a trademark for me. Though retaining folk motifs does not follow the modern trends in fashion, I make my items bearing in mind the needs of our modern age.
