Ádám Galambos – Shawl Bay
My story:
“Nature is my lover, muse and studio.”
I am the founder and lead artist of the Shawlbay weaving workshop. In addition to designing and producing wearable textile art, my aim is to teach others to realise their potential by reviving old traditions. I first learned how to weave from my grandmother. This craft was almost a lost legacy in my family. I had a desire to keep the tradition alive, so I started studying it. I have learned several techniques from various masters in Egypt, Serbia, Greece and Turkey, among others. I have developed my own technique by combining the techniques and traditions I have discovered in these countries.

When making the products, I pay special attention to creating multifunctional pieces, meaning that a scarf can become a stole or a headscarf, and, if you ever get bored of it, you can even use it as a beautiful table runner or framed work of art. For weaving, I use cotton, wool, cashmere, silk, recycled silk and cotton. I mainly specialise in linen weaving. I create the pattern of my “scarves” by combining the techniques of upholstery and carpet weaving, with which I can create uniquely durable and special pieces, retaining the fineness and airiness of the fibres used as raw materials.
I draw inspiration from a lot of places: myths and legends of different cultures, op art, Bauhaus, Impressionism, and the artworks of Victor Vasarely, Rothko and Monet. I love working outdoors, close to the shapes and colours of nature. In order to have the least possible impact on our fragile environment, I only use natural fibres. I strive to encourage everyone to coexist peacefully with nature.
